The Aristotle’s Park, a unique theme park in Halkidiki, is located at an altitude of about 500 meters, in the historical village of Stagira, beside the remains of Machalas, the capital of Mademochoria.

It is worth visiting for its interesting instruments and the great view to the gulf of Ierissos.

The park preexisted and the wonderful location was chosen in 1956 to host the statue of Aristotle, made by sculptor Nicholas, in honor of the great philosopher who was born in Ancient Stagira.

The unique interactive instruments were placed there in 2003 by the Municipal Corporation of Stagira-Akanthos.

They are experimental instruments, operating by rules of physics that are mentioned in Aristotle’s textbooks and especially in the one called “The Naturals”.

With this addition, the park has become a favorite destination for every visitor and school, since it combines recreation, entertainment and education.

An Orthodox spiritual center since 1054, Mount Athos has enjoyed an autonomous statute since Byzantine times.

Mount Athos – The Holy Mountain

The ‘Holy Mountain‘, which is forbidden to women and children, is also a recognized artistic site. The layout of the monasteries (about 20 of which are presently inhabited by some 1,400 monks) had an influence as far afield as Russia, and its school of painting influenced the history of Orthodox art.

Cloaked by beautiful chestnut and other types of Mediterranean forest, the steep slopes of Mount Athos are punctuated by twenty imposing monasteries and their subsidiary establishments.

Covering an area of just over 33,000 hectares, the property includes the entire narrow rocky strip of the easternmost of the three peninsulas of Halkidiki which jut into the Aegean Sea in northern Greece. The subsidiary establishments include skites, kellia and kathismata (living units operated by the monks), where farming constitutes an important part of the monks’ everyday life.

Only 5 km away from Neos Marmaras to an altitude of 350 m, you will find the traditional village of Parthenonas.

The name Parthenonas is mentioned in documents from 10th century but there is no much information about the village itself and its role in the past. In 1970 the site was rediscovered and called the abandoned village of Sithonia since only abandoned and ruined houses were found in it (some of them still can be seen).

Today in the village there are family hotels, restaurants and cafes. All guest houses and villas built after the village rediscovery adhere to the architecture of the abandoned houses, to preserve the authenticity of the place.

The streets are cobbled, narrow and steep because Parthenonas is located on a hill overlooking the coastline and the islet of Kelyfos.

Aristotle’s motherland

Stagira, or Stageira was an ancient Greek city, located in central Macedonia, near the eastern coast of the peninsula of Halkidiki, and is chiefly known for being the birthplace of Aristotle, who was a Greek philosopher and polymath, a student of Plato and teacher of Alexander the Great.

The city lies approximately 8 km north northeast of the present-day village of Stagira, close to the town of Olympiada.

Stagira was founded in 655 BC by Ionian settlers from Andros. Xerxes I of Persia occupied it in 480 BC. The city later joined the Delian League, led by Athens, but left in 424 BC: as a result, the Athenian demagogue Cleon laid siege to it in 422 BC.

However, Cleon was a poor strategist and his conduct of the siege was very inefficient: so much so that the ancient Greek comedy writer Aristophanes satirized him in the play The Knights. Cleon died in the same year, in the battle of Amphipolis. Later, during the Peloponnesian War, Stagira sided with Sparta against the Athenians.

The cave of Petralona “embellished” with stalagmites and stalactites is located in the west foot of the Katsika (Goat) mountain in Halkidiki and in an altitude of about 300 meters from the level of sea.

The systematic excavations of the Cave began in 1965 by the founder of the Anthropologic Company of Greece, anthropologist professor Aris Paulianos.

His researches proved that the Arhanthropos is about 700.000 years old, and this makes him the “oldest” European.

This age was determined after the detailed analysis of stratigraphy, and after studying the primitive and Paleolithic tools as well as the palaiofauna that were discovered in almost all the layers.

Among the fossils of animals that have extinct the following are included: lions, hyenas, bears, panthers, elephants, rhinoceros, megakeroi, bison and various species of deer and hippo, and also 25 species of birds, 16 species of rodents and 17 species of bats.

Distance from Neos Marmaras: 77 km
